Everything You need to know about energy

I remember when I was deep in the trenches of low energy and daily exhaustion. It felt like I was being pulled in every direction trying to figure out why I had no energy in the first place.

I’d go online and read things like:

“You’re anemic.”
“Take a multivitamin.”
“Get more sunlight.”
“Try intermittent fasting.”
“Fix your disordered sleep.”

And the list went on… and on… and on.

Honestly? I ended up more drained just trying to fix my energy. It was exhausting. It left me confused, frustrated, and feeling like something must just be wrong with me.

Spoiler alert: there wasn’t anything wrong with me. But there were systems in my body that needed support. And most of my clients? They’ve felt the exact same way.

So let’s cut through the noise. Today, I’m giving you everything you need to know about energy—what actually causes you to feel tired all the time, and what to do about it.

Let’s dive in.

Your Energy Is Trying to Tell You Something

If you’re feeling constantly tired, dragging through your day, or just not yourself, it’s not because you’re lazy or not trying hard enough. It’s your body’s way of saying:

“Hey! Something isn’t working right.”

Energy problems are usually the result of deeper dysfunction—and understanding what’s really going on is the first step to fixing it.

This is why working with a holistic nutritionist (like me!) is so powerful. Instead of slapping a band-aid on symptoms, we dig into why your energy is low and create a plan that actually helps you feel like yourself again.

When it comes to low energy, there are three major players I see over and over again with my clients:

1. Blood Sugar Dysregulation

We’ve all heard that blood sugar only matters if you’re diabetic. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Your blood sugar is one of the main systems your body uses to regulate energy. And it’s working all the time—not just after eating cake.

When blood sugar spikes and crashes throughout the day, so does your energy. That 3 p.m. slump? That morning grogginess even after a full night’s sleep? That post-meal crash? Yep—blood sugar.

And behind the scenes, your HPA axis is working hard to keep things balanced.

Wait… what’s the HPA axis?

Great question! The HPA axis is a network made up of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands. These organs control your stress response and help regulate things like:

  • Cortisol and adrenaline production (your energy and alertness hormones)

  • Blood pressure

  • Blood sugar

  • Inflammation

  • Sleep-wake cycles

When your body is under constant stress (think: work deadlines, poor sleep, skipping meals, over-exercising, or just living in 2025), the HPA axis gets overworked.

And when it starts to struggle, you might notice:

  • Feeling wired at night but exhausted in the morning

  • Crashing after meals

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Feeling anxious or on edge

  • Energy that just doesn’t bounce back

Healing the HPA axis and stabilizing blood sugar go hand-in-hand. This usually involves nutrition shifts, targeted supplements, and—importantly—lifestyle support (because we can’t out-supplement stress).

One of the most impactful changes I make with clients is helping them figure out what to eat, how to eat it, and when to eat it to keep their blood sugar steady and their HPA axis supported.

2. Digestion

Here’s a big truth bomb: if your digestive system isn’t working well, your body can’t absorb the nutrients it needs to maintain energy. Period.

You could be eating the most nourishing meals on the planet—but if you’re not digesting them well, your cells won’t get what they need. It’s like trying to fill up your gas tank with the nozzle halfway in—it’s messy, frustrating, and ineffective.

I often see clients who are dealing with things like:

  • Bloating after meals

  • Constipation or loose stools

  • Heartburn or reflux

  • Feeling full quickly or still hungry right after eating

  • Food intolerances that seem to be multiplying by the week

  • Skin issues like acne or rashes

These symptoms might not seem like energy problems at first, but they are.

If you’re constantly bloated or your gut feels inflamed, your body is stuck in “put out the fire” mode—which drains your energy quickly. Plus, if you’re not absorbing nutrients like B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and amino acids, your body literally can’t make energy on a cellular level.

And here's the kicker: digestion starts before food even hits your mouth. It involves:

  • Your brain signaling “rest and digest” mode (hint: this doesn’t happen when you eat while stressed or distracted)

  • Stomach acid breaking down proteins so your body can access amino acids (needed for energy, muscle repair, neurotransmitters)

  • Bile from your gallbladder breaking down fats (crucial for blood sugar balance and hormone production)

  • Enzymes from your pancreas breaking down carbs, fats, and proteins

  • The gut lining allowing nutrients through (while keeping out inflammatory substances)

  • And a diverse microbiome keeping inflammation low and nutrient absorption high

When even one part of this system is off, the whole thing slows down—and so do you.

This is why I never use a one-size-fits-all approach with clients. Some need support with stomach acid. Others have sluggish bile flow or gut bacteria imbalance. Others are so stressed that their body isn't even prioritizing digestion anymore.

The magic happens when we figure out where your digestive system is struggling and create a personalized plan to support it. That’s when things like clearer thinking, better moods, regular poops (yes, I said it), and actual sustainable energy start showing up.

3. Food Confusion

We live in a world that has made food wildly confusing.

You Google what to eat, and suddenly you’re being told:

  • Avocados are bad because of the fat

  • Fruit has too much sugar

  • Meat causes heart disease

  • Oats are toxic

  • Coffee is healing—or the devil

  • Carbs will ruin your life

No wonder you're overwhelmed. And no wonder your body is exhausted.

This food confusion leads people to cut out entire food groups, eat less food overall, and feel constant guilt about what’s on their plate. And all of that leads to your body not getting what it needs to make energy in the first place.

Food shouldn’t feel like a moral dilemma. It’s nourishment. It’s information for your body. It’s joy and connection and fuel for your cells.

When I work with clients, we remove the noise.

I help them understand exactly what to eat so their body feels supported, nourished, and energized—not restricted or confused. We create simple, doable meal strategies that leave your body saying, “YES, finally.”

Final Thoughts

If you’re feeling tired all the time and nothing you’ve tried seems to work, you’re not broken. You’re not making it up. And you’re definitely not alone.

There are real, physiological reasons behind your low energy—and the good news? They’re fixable.

When we support your blood sugar, your HPA axis, your digestion, and your relationship with food, your energy starts to shift in ways that feel almost magical.

But it’s not magic. It’s biology.

You just need someone to help you untangle what’s going on and guide you with a plan that actually works for you.
